Civil engineering(VS) Professional study

Civil engineering belongs to the oldest organized activities of the mankind since the pre-historic times. This is evident from many monumental structures that have survived to the present days. We can certainly claim that construction has been one of the main drivers of the human civilisation in the past and will continue to be in the future. Be part of this success story and be part of the realization of the dream of progressive and sustainable structures that will provide a high quality of life and function for the population.
In addition to the basic knowledge in professional study of civil engineering of the first degree, you will gain a wealth of practical experience in the areas of management, preparation and organization of construction works, design of structures and infrastructures, rehabilitation of the buildings, building supervision, safety at work, and you will also learn about and practically test a wide range of building materials and construction technologies.

After completing your studies, you’ll be able to work and participate in all segments of construction, from pit excavation to handing the building over for final usage. Moreover, you can work as an expert in the local and national administration or other professional positions related to construction. The further master’s study of Civil Engineering at FGPA is also possible after completing the first degree.

SCHEME OF THE SUBJECT MATTER

Study programme enrolment conditions and selection criteria at limited enrolment

The enrolment in higher professional degree study programme of Civil Engineering is possible if the student has passed the secondary school leaving examination in any program, vocational matura examination or matura examination.

If only a limited number of students are admitted, the candidates are selected according to:

  • general performance in a secondary school leaving examination, vocational matura or matura examination 60 % points,
  • general performance in the 3rd and 4th year of the secondary school 40 % points.
Main study programme objectives and general competences of graduates, gained at a study programme

Fundamental goals of the 1st degree vocational college study Civil Engineering are:

  • The mandatory part of the programme provides general practically-oriented education, whereas profound special knowledge is included in the elective modules and courses accounting for 20 ECTS or 11.1% of all student obligations. Such a programme provides better overview in construction problems, more effective cooperation in solving complex construction problems, better employment flexibility and easier acquiring of various specific knowledge. Therefore, such programme is more suitable for a relative small industry like the one in Slovenia than a more specific programme where the efficient employment is possible only in a specific discipline.
  • The programme focuses into practical and innovative problem solving where the knowledge acquiring comes from the analysis of concrete practical problems, followed by abstraction.
  • The programme helps students to develop critical and innovative thinking and qualify them for correct and modern solving of all simple and general practical problems in construction.
  • The graduates will be able to understand which duties they can perform independently and correctly. Also, they will be able to formulate the duties that are beyond their knowledge and surpass them to competent experts.
  • The focus is on skill development in order to understand and solve practical problems by taking into account valid Slovene and European norms and regulations in construction.
  • The study programme offers enough fundamental general theoretical knowledge, general and specific professional knowledge and practical projects, so that the graduates can connect specific knowledge and specialties from construction.
  • The elective modules and elective courses provide proficiency in specific professional knowledge.
  • The work on integral practical projects during the studies and practical work in industry help students to understand practical problems and their solutions and qualify them for the independent solution.
  • Education of widely proficient graduates who will independently solve practical engineering problems and connect activities of experts from different fields in order to perform optimal realization of practical duties in construction or related to construction.
  • Contents of expected knowledge in construction meet the requirements of construction industry in Slovenia, European Union and worldwide.
  • Adjustment of the study programme to Bologna declaration which indirectly enables international comparison and transferability.
  • Education of an expert in civil engineering according to European guidelines and international compatibility of the programme, who can be employed after the finished study also in Europe.
  • On 24 December 2014 FEANI (FEANI EMC) federation affirmed 1st degree vocational college study Civil Engineering which is now recorded in so called FEANI INDEX programme. Students of engineering programmes recorded in FEANI INDEX can gain the title EUR-ING according to the FEANI rules, they can apply for European Engineering card at SIZ (NC SI FEANI) which is a European professional identification document for engineers.
  • Even though the programme assures the proper education in civil engineering, the one of the goals is to qualify and motivate the graduate for further studies.

In terms of general competences, students of the 1st degree vocational college study Civil Engineering gain:

  • Ability to design and execute construction works in suitable quality and value based on acquired basic knowledge in fundamental natural sciences, informatics, geodesy, engineering ethics, fundamental construction disciplines, and the ability to provide an independent engineering assessment based on scientific and professional analysis and synthesis. – Ability to predict solutions and consequences.
  • Proficiency in basics of research methods, procedures and processes, development of critical and self-critical evaluation.
  • Ability to communicate in national and international environment.
  • Autonomy in professional work – Ability for ethic reflexion and commitment to professional ethics. – Ability to use their knowledge in practice. – Ability and sense for solving practical problems.
  • Cooperativity and team work ability both in the national and international environment.
  • Ability for creative work in a construction project team and a contractor team. – Ability to connect the basis of engineering economics and problems of environmental protection with the design of structures and construction products.
  • Creativity and innovation as a result of interdisciplinarity of the study.
Criteria for completing the study

The study is completed when all obligations, prescribed by the study programmes are fulfilled, and 180 ECTS are collected.

Elective courses

Students can choose between the following elective courses:

  • technical German – core subject
  • technical English
  • sports
  • transportation planning
  • insulating materials for civil engineers
  • structural mechanics 4

all of the elective courses are available here

Criteria for transfer between study programmes

According to Criteria for transferring between study programmes, candidates can enroll into:

  • the second or third year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering, if they terminate the education in their first study programme and they proceed study within the same programme of the same degree or enroll into a new study programme of the same degree.
They can transfer from the field of civil engineering, architecture, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering and from other engineering, natural sciences and mathematical disciplines.
  • The enrolment of the higher vocational graduates into the second year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering is possible from the field of civil engineering and other field-related disciplines.

The transfer is possible under the following conditions:

  • if candidates fulfil conditions for the enrolment into the first year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Civil Engineering,
  • if they come from the study programme which provides comparable competences or learning outcomes,
  • if at least half of the obligations according the European transfer credit system (hereinafter ECTS) can be recognized from the first study programme that are related to the mandatory courses of the second study programme. Decision about transferring from one study programme into another is made by the relevant committee of the senate from the faculty where the candidate wants to continue the studies.

According to the Regulations on knowledge and skill recognition in study programmes of the University of Maribor, the candidates should provide the faculty with:

  • application for knowledge and skill recognition at the University of Maribor,
  • certificate on completed study obligations (examinations) with grades and number of credits,
  • accredited syllabi of the completed courses,
  • confirmation about the payment of the procedure. When transferring from one study programme into another, completed study obligations can be recognized according to the contents, scope and complexity of knowledge in the new programme, also, new obligations are determined which a candidate should complete in order to finish the studies in a new study programme.
Assessment criteria

Regulations and syllabi provide for each study unit forms of evaluation and assessment. Instantaneous methods of knowledge evaluation and assessment are encouraged, enabling students to control their own study development directly.

Study advancement options

Graduates from higher professional degree study programme are admitted to master’s studies (second degree) according to the requirements established by the faculty offering post-graduate studies.

I started my studies at FGPA in 2011 after graduating from the II. Secondary school in Maribor. Even as a child, I was keen observer of what was happening on the construction sites around me, so it wasn’t hard to find out what it was to make me happy. Later, during my secondary school years, I knew that this was the field I wanted to work in, and so I enrolled at the FGPA. If you choose to study what you are passionate about, then you cannot go wrong.
